Dear Riley,
You are five months old today. I can't believe how fast the time has flown by and how big you have gotten.
You are now grasping things quite well and transferring them from hand to hand. In our breastfeeding support group you played with your rattle for about 5 minutes and I just sat there watching you beaming with pride. After all just a few weeks ago that wouldn't have happened.
You are also sitting up, and while you can't do it for very long you have made amazing improvements in this ability with just a few days practice. I love watching you sit and can't wait for your bald spot to get hair now that you are sitting more and more. Even though you can sit on your own, you still love the bumbo seat for when you get tierd or have just eaten.
I wish I had better news about breastfeeding and sleep. For the last three weeks both have been crappy. We are still breastfeeding but I feel fairly defeated about it. I want to make it to 6 months so today we aren't quitting, but I don't think we will be making it to a year. I am saddened by this but also relived that I will soon be getting my body back. When you nurse well then I love breastfeeding but sadly we are averaging about one good feeding a day and that is killing me. Of course because you aren't eating well you aren't sleeping well. We seem to get one good night of sleep out of you and then 4 nights of hell. Last night you were up over 5 times. I actually lost count because it got to the point where daddy was sleeping on the floor of your room. We are tired so if tonight you could sleep well we would be thankful. I know that the moment you start sleeping better I will decide to keep breastfeeding, I really do love it and I know it is the best nutrition for you.
It is so much fun to watch you interact with others these days. Besides daddy and me your next favorite person is Grandma Dallas. You light up for her and she loves you so much. You do however give her a hard time when you are hungry or sleepy. I don't understand why though, she does everything just like I do but you still want me or daddy. Grandma Dallas has been trying to get you to take a bottle. You took an ounce the other day and we were so happy. I really hope you learn to take full feedings from the bottle soon, it would really help us out with feeling better about breastfeeding.
Some of the things we are doing together during the day include our breastfeeding support group, baby yoga and other things at Day One, and the park. You love to watch the big kids play and get so excited to see them. Daddy says you would jump off our laps and run after them if you could.
Your favorite time of day is when daddy gets home. You just light up for him. Recently he has been talking to you about Star Wars. He wants you to be a geek just like him. He is great about diaper changes, giving you your meds and playing with you but he doesn't like bath time, which is funny because you love the bath. He reads to you, does baby yoga to help you poop and sings songs to you, and you just beam back at him.
We love you so much Riley and are thankful for every day. You are a wonderful little boy and we consider ourselves luck to have been chosen to be your mommy and daddy.
Love Always,
Your Mommy

A letter
Dear baby,
Tomorrow is my 2nd u/s and we should be able to hear your heart beating and get better pictures of you. I hope you like having your picture taken because I am seriously attached to my camera and love to document everything. I am scared about tomorrow, that something is wrong, and that you will not be there tomorrow. I don't feel this way because of a sympom or anything just a mother's worry about her child. The same way I will worry about you first plane ride with Grandpa Pete and your first overnight with Grandma Dallas, as well as your first day at school.
I have just begun to realize how much I love you, how much I want you and how awful life would be without you. You may only be the size of a rasberry tomorrow but I love you more than anything else in the world. Please be there, growing strong with your heart beating away. In return I will try to relax more next week.
I promise to always do what I think is right for you, to always be the best mommy I can be. I am sure at times (thinking ahead to your teen years) you will hate the things I do "in your best intreast" but I am your mother and will always do what I think is best for you.
All my Love,
Your Mommy

A letter
Dear Baby(s),
You are just cells dividing and dividing and yet already we love you. Mommy and daddy are asking that you please stick around for the next 9 almost 10 months so that we can love you forever. We of course want you to stick around and come to live with us. We are ready to love, hug, care for and take care of you not just for the next 9-10 months but for the next 25 years. We want to be your mommy and daddy, so please snuggle in tight. Already there are people who love you and want you here on Earth with us.
There is Grandma D, who supports mommy as much as mommy supports her. She is a great grandma already and she would love one or two more babies to love. She promises to spoil you completely rotten, and have you over for sleepovers. She may not ever run along side your bike but she will kiss scraped knees and always have a kind word. She promises "what happens at grandma's stays at grandma's" much to mommy and daddy's worry. She already donates to March of Dimes in your names every time we got grocery shopping, she signs the bottom "little 'Ariel' or 'r' to be". She wants you here with us so please snuggle in tight.
There is Grandma G who knows nothing of our IUI but wants to be a grandma so badly she gives mommy a hard time about it when we talk. She would come out to CA and spoil you rotten and never put you down. She would get up at your 2 am feedings too. When you get older we will visit her in Arkansas and she will let you ride her dog who is more like a pony. So please snuggle in tight.
Your cousins are moving back to CA in the winter and thus will be here for your birth. They love babies and while they aren't old enough to care for you on their own I know they will love helping Mommy care for you. So please snuggle in tight.
Your Auntie Rhea will love being an aunt, she loves infants and her and I will take all of you to the park and on the train and you will love playing with her and the kids. She will take you when Mommy and Daddy need to shower or go shopping. She will love you and kiss you and say you are the cutest little babies since hers were born, and she will be right. So please snuggle in tight.
Your Auntie Shannon and Holly ( not 'real' Aunties but close enough) want you here too. You can go to SF with me and them for the day, go to vote for Shannon when she runs for president. They will love you and hold you and not want to give you back. Holly even said she would take you overnight although mommy isn't sure about that. I do know they will love you and spoil you and mommy. So please snuggle in tight.
Grandpa Pete flies air planes and when you are three he will sit you on his lap and let you fly while mommy stays on the ground and prays for your safe return. He will run you up and down the steep hill and talk shop about planes and trains. He will love you just like his other grandchildren. So please snuggle in tight.
Pop-pop is your last grandparent and he has a unusual sense of humor, just a warning. He plays guitar and will happily teach you. He comes over for dinner once a week and lives close by. You will see a lot of him. When you get older he will teach you about trains, take you to museums, and ride BART with you for free. He loves you too so please snuggle in tight.
I could go on and on about extended family and other cousin's you will have but won't. Please know mommy, daddy and so many others love you already and we want you here on Earth with us. So find a good spot in my nice warm uterus and snuggle in tight.
Love always,
Mommy
